New Weigh and Hold Station for Anglers on Lake Austin

January 29, 2015by Brian Talley

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has opened a new self-service weigh and holding station for anglers beneath the Loop 360 bridge on Lake Austin. The station includes a certified scale and a holding cage where a fish can stay in its habitat until a TPWD representative arrives to verify the catch officially.

The station was built to improve the process of determining whether a fish is a ShareLunker bass — a largemouth bass that’s 13 pounds or heavier. ShareLunker fish are used for breeding, in order to increase the number of large bass in the lake, and the holding station helps reduce stress on the fish.

If the station is successful, TPWD plans to build similar stations at Lady Bird Lake and Lake Travis. ShareLunker season runs from Oct. 1 through April 30 each year.
