Re-register Your LCRA Floodgate Notifications

March 12, 2015by Brian Talley

Lake Austin Tom Miller DamThe Lower Colorado River Authority is updating its Floodgate Operations Notification Service, and, as a result, all subscribers will need to re-register in order to continue to receive the notifications. The free service alerts subscribers when floodgate operations on the Highland Lakes are imminent or underway.

Subscribers must re-register by March 31. The alerts are given via text, email, and/or phone, with an automated message describing floodgate operations. The alerts will make follow-up attempts if a phone is busy or not answered.

The service is encouraged for people who live, own property, or operate businesses along the Highland Lakes or the lower Colorado River – those who may be affected by floodgate operations. Subscribers can choose notifications for Buchanan, Wirtz, Starcke, Mansfield, and/or Tom Miller dams.

“Water moving through floodgates creates stronger, higher flows downstream, and people may need to take immediate action to protect themselves, their family and their property,” said John Hofmann, LCRA executive vice president of Water. “LCRA offers this service to keep the public informed when floodgate operations are underway.”

While the system provides floodgate operation alerts, it is not a flood warning system, and it is suggested that all potentially impacted individuals monitor NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards broadcasts and local news media whenever flooding is a possibility. The system also is designed to alert subscribers only to initial floodgate operations, not each additional gate operation or for regular operations or when LCRA moves small amounts of water downstream.
