Boats Back on Lake Austin

May 12, 2016by Brian Talley

Boats are back on Lake Austin after a temporary recreational boating ban was issued by the Austin Fire Department after the Lower Colorado River Authority opened floodgates at Mansfield Dam and Tom Miller Dam.

Dangerous currents and high waters from the inflow and from heavy rains resulted in closed off portions of both Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake.

The Lake Austin ban spanned from Walsh Landing to the Tom Miller Dam. The Lady Bird Lake ban spanned from the Tom Miller Dam to Red Bud Trail. Watercraft illegally used during a ban is subject to impoundment.

It was the first time since 2007 that a floodgate on Mansfield Dam was opened.  Lake Travis is currently considered full, and Lake Buchanan is close to full, purposely being held slightly below because of a project to upgrade and strengthen floodgates.

Lake Austin, as always, has a constant water level.
