Texas Tops U-Haul Destination List Again

Texas was the top state for one-way U-Haul® truck customers during 2022, the second consecutive year it claimed the top spot and the fifth time since 2016. Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia rounded out the top five for destination states, while New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, and California were the bottom five states, meaning they experienced the greatest net losses of one-way U-Haul trucks.

The U-Haul report stated “more people opted to leave areas of the West Coast, Northeast and Midwest,” while migrating “to the Southeast and Southwest U.S.” Virginia and Alabama were the biggest risers, both climbing 26 spots. Florida has been in the top three for seven years straight.

Although there were fewer overall DIY moves in 2022 than in record-breaking 2021, data was collected from more than two million one-way U-Haul truck transactions.

The 2022 trends in migration followed very similar patterns to 2021 with Texas, Florida, the Carolinas and the Southwest continuing to see solid growth,” said U-Haul International President John “J.T.” Taylor. “We still have areas with strong demand for one-way rentals. While overall migration in 2021 was record-breaking, we continue to experience significant customer demand to move out of some geographic areas to destinations at the top of our growth list.”
