About Lake Austin

Many of Austin’s most desirable and luxurious homes are situated on the shores and hills of Lake Austin. A part of the Colorado River chain, it maintains a year-round, constant water level and is a popular destination for pleasure boating, watersports, and fishing. The portion of the lake that is considered Lake Austin reaches from Mansfield Dam in far west Austin to Tom Miller Dam, just west of MoPac, with the stretch extending approximately 20 miles total. Water depths reach 75 feet, and the open water area equals about 1,600 acres.

Homes there can range from older “lake houses” to newer estate and luxury residences, with higher end homes and homes with five-digit square footage becoming more common each year. Homebuyers who are interested in purchasing a home along the lake should expect to spend in the millions, up to the multi-millions, and in return will enjoy lake lifestyle living at its best.

Many homes directly on the shoreline will have their own boat ramps, but there are also several public ramps in the area, including at Walsh Boat Landing, Loop 360, Emma Long Park, Commons Ford Park, and Mary Quinlan Park. Also along the shores – albeit 780 feet above sea level – is Mount Bonnell, one of Austin’s most well-known viewing spots. A staircase takes visitors to its peak, where visitors can view sunsets, the lake, and downtown Austin.

Restaurants directly on the lake include popular favorites such as Hula Hut, Abel’s on the Lake, Mozart’s Coffee Roasters, County Line on the Lake, and Ski Shores Café.

Lake Austin also is home to two of Austin’s most exclusive luxury conclaves: Austin Country Club and Lake Austin Spa. Founded in 1899, the Austin Country Club is the oldest golf club in Austin, with an 18-hole, 180-acre golf course and learning center, ten tennis courts, a fitness facility and heated swimming pool, a clubhouse, and boat slips. Lake Austin Spa is world-renowned, receiving countless awards that name it among the best – if not the best – spa in the world. The spa is situated along the shores and taps into its natural features through views and walking trails, yoga on the lake, and more. Amenities include spa treatments, private rooms, pools, organic meals, and an assortment of wellness classes.

Homes have access to many nearby private schools, and the area is zoned for Austin Independent School District, Eanes ISD, Lake Travis ISD, or Leander ISD, depending on location.
